BSC

Role in the project

BSC will lead the development of the Operational Sandbox Scheme (OSS – WP3), focusing on establishing operational standards, benchmarks, and guidelines to meet the requirements of the Union Sandbox Framework (USF), and ensuring compliance with the AI Act and operational processes for AI regulatory sandboxes, including compatibility with HPC infrastructures. BSC will also support other WPs in the development of the USF and modelling for cross-border cooperation between national competent authorities (WP2), the scheming, implementation, evaluation and tuning of pilot projects to test the USF and OSS (WP4), and the development of a stakeholder map and a co-creation strategy (WP6).

Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the national supercomputing centre in Spain. We specialise in high performance computing (HPC) and manage MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe. BSC is at the service of the international scientific community and of industry that requires HPC resources. Our multidisciplinary research team and our computational facilities –including MareNostrum– make BSC an international centre of excellence in e-Science. Since its establishment in 2005, BSC has developed an active role in promoting HPC in Spain and Europe as an essential tool for international competitiveness in science and engineering. The centre manages the Red Española de Supercomputación (RES), and was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. We actively participate in the main European HPC initiatives, in close cooperation with other European supercomputing centres. Research at BSC focuses on five fields: Computer Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Computer Applications in Science and Engineering, and Computational Social Sciences and Humanities.
